Iraqi Soccer Team Pissed at Bush

DAILY KOS - Bush is running an ad featuring the Iraq and Afghanistan Olympic teams. The Iraqi soccer team -- one of the darlings of these games -- is not amused.
Sadir had a message for U.S. president George W. Bush, who is using the Iraqi Olympic team in his latest re-election campaign advertisements.

In those spots, the flags of Iraq and Afghanistan appear as a narrator says, "At this Olympics there will be two more free nations -- and two fewer terrorist regimes."

"Iraq as a team does not want Mr. Bush to use us for the presidential campaign," Sadir told SI.com through a translator, speaking calmly and directly. "He can find another way to advertise himself."

Ahmed Manajid, who played as a midfielder on Wednesday, had an even stronger response when asked about Bush's TV advertisement. "How will he meet his god having slaughtered so many men and women?" Manajid told me. "He has committed so many crimes."
There is more in the article.

"To a man, members of the Iraqi Olympic delegation say they are glad that former Olympic committee head Uday Hussein, who was responsible for the serial torture of Iraqi athletes and was killed four months after the U.S.-led coalition invaded Iraq in March 2003, is no longer in power."

I see you chose not to include that part of the story.....interesting. Just another part of the same story.

Keith,

Let me address your concerns. First, yes, that is part of the SI article which I posted a link to. But if you want to talk about selectively editing stuff, I noticed YOU did not include the segment immediately following the above quote, which reads as follows:

But they also find it offensive that Bush is using Iraq for his own gain when they do not support his administration's actions. "My problems are not with the American people," says Iraqi soccer coach Adnan Hamad. "They are with what America has done in Iraq: destroy everything. The American army has killed so many people in Iraq. What is freedom when I go to the [national] stadium and there are shootings on the road?"

You'll notice that I credited this entire blog posting to the Daily Kos, so if you have a beef with how it was originally written, you should comment there. However, I must note that due to copyright restrictions, it is my understanding that websites usually can only post four paragraphs or so from a story before they run the risk of lawsuits (although I occasionally break this rule - sssshhhh). But in defense of Kos, who gets a quarter million hits per day on his site, I must point out that he does recommend that you read the rest of the story.

And if you did, I think you'll agree that the main point of the article is conveyed well by this post, in that the Iraqi soccer players--regardless of their disdain for a brutal punk who is no longer alive--are still pissed at Bushy Boy for using their images in TV ads against their will and good conscience for political purposes.
